After a week in the front line in the Loos sector, the 21st Middlesex battalion of 121 Brigade, 40th Division were relieved on 29th July, 1916 and moved back back into the support and reserve lines. This did not however mean they were safe because that evening the enemy unleashed a heavy artillery bombardment  on all positions but especially on the support and reserve lines into which 21st Middlesex had just moved. This bombardment continued through to the next day and during the evening of 30th July the battalion provided work parties to repair the trenches as a result of which more men fell victim to the continuing shell fire. Among the casualties suffered by the battalion as a result of all this was Harry Galliers who died from wounds on 30th July.
